Benefits of Iyengar Yoga

The Iyengar method promotes mobility, stability, strength and alignment in addition to flexibility and relaxation.

Iyengar yoga emphasizes precision of alignment in the yoga poses. This is important so that weak areas strengthen and stiff areas release.

Freedom and spaciousness in the body develops over time. This can be frustrating for someone who is new to yoga.

Typically after you leave your first yoga class you end up with sore muscles the next day and the day after that. Hang in there. I have found over the years the more I practice the less pain I have. Patience with ourselves is important when first learning this style of yoga. I often hear, “I am too stiff to do yoga.” “I am too old to do yoga.” “I am not very flexible.” Perhaps you are stiff, old and not very flexible however, try to think beyond that and practice yoga anyway! Yoga poses can be modified to suit you. All bodies are different. Modifying a pose will help you to stay in the pose longer or maybe just to be able to touch into the pose and then release from the pose. A pose does not have to be held for a certain amount of time, especially in the beginning of your yoga journey. You will most likely notice, after some time, changes for the better in your body and perhaps even your mind when you commit to practicing.
